From the Vietnamese point of view, the fall of Saigon, which had been the South Vietnamese Political base, marked the end of the Vietnam War on April 30th 1975. This was highlighted by a tank crashing through the gates of the Independence Palace. The National Liberation Front (NLF) or Viet Cong flag was then raised above the palace at 11:30 a.m the local time and acting President of South Vietnam Duong Van Minh surrendered soon after that. Thousands of U.S. diplomatic, military, and civilian personnel were evacuated via helicopter before and after the event. Vietnam became a united and communist country since then.
